SHA Wellness Clinic in Alicante, Spain reviewed

Imagine walking into such an exclusive institution where your ultimate wellbeing, comfort and pleasure are the centre of attention to achieving ‘the best version of yourself’? Surely, these places exist for just celebrities right? Wrong!!! Welcome to SHA Wellness Clinic in Alicante, Spain.

Last week we drifted into a serene, white washed, über contemporary establishment where our dreamlike experience began at SHA Wellness Clinic in Alicante, Spain. The SHA has an immaculate somewhat clinical interior, however the friendliness and smiles of the front of house of staff members shows that customers definitely come first in this establishment. It’s hard to put into words but I felt instantly relaxed, calm and ready for the journey that lay ahead.

SHA is a place that will envelop you in wisdom, state of the art health sciences and personalised programs. There’s no doubt SHA is a unique concept – its not just a hotel, a spa or a clinic but something that will wrap you up in cotton wool, hold your hand along the way and pamper your every need to the best of it’s ability. It will not falter or let you down but simply pick you up and champion YOU right from the outset. The concept is a remarkable experience and we only saw just a very small glimpse of what could be achieved.

Before we begin to give you an insight, highlighting the SHA method would be a good start – it’s a perfect mix of lifestyle, nutrition and wellbeing ultimately giving you complete internal balance to deal with the stresses and health issues of every day life. Balance is the key here!

Our stay started with a Macrobiotic consultation, which lasted 30 minutes with Nutrition & Health Counselor, Teresa Mizon – the consultation is tailored to each guest’s lifestyle, health issues and genetic make up. The most common programs prescribed, tackle serious weight loss, detox and smoking related matters although on the surface no one seemed badly obese or unhealthy.

Our initial tour of SHA was overwhelming and we hadn’t imagined that it was built on such a big scale – five buildings to be exact. We of course expected a boutique but certainly not a library, the SHA Club or an Academy where guests can learn from different wellness experts each day. The attention to detail and precision of customer service we experienced throughout our stay was out of this world, everyone and everywhere made us happy!

Our deluxe suite, which is one of 93 suites, was exquisite with stunning views of the mountain. It was stylish yet homely containing everything imaginable to make us feel comfortable. It comprised of a large living space, separate bedroom, separate bathroom, walk-in closet and big terrace.

We ventured down to the SHAMADI restaurant for lunch where we were able to choose from three different 3-course menus – Kushi (400-600 calories, for the die hard detoxers), Bio Light (600-800 calories, most suitable for fitness addicts) and SHA (1500 – 2000 calories for those that desire a macrobiotic taster). We opted for the Bio Light and SHA menus. The Bio Light menu started with a lentil, coriander crème fraiche soup, the main was a dish of grilled polenta with sweet and sour azuki beans and steamed veg (delicious!) and for dessert a barley and coffee pud. The SHA menu was equally as appetising and started with a warm seasonal salad with tofu and creamed pumpkin, basil and mint tagliatelle for main and a tasty carob brownie with vanilla ice cream – both menus were surprisingly delightful and left us feeling very satisfied!

Next stop the Wellness area – complete hydrotherapy circuit with two indoor swimming pools, numerous treatment rooms, a treatment suite for couples, medical rooms and a consultation room, waiting rooms and relaxation areas. After enjoying the circuit a couple of times, we had a well-earned nap on our loungers, which set us up beautifully for our 50-minute relaxing massages.

Over the period of a few hours our metabolisms had kick started for sure and with only half an hour to spare before dinner we literally raced down to choose our evening menus. We both chose the SHA menu and the warm mushroom salad starter was one of the best dishes we have sampled – ever! I can still taste the smoky flavours!

I had never considered checking myself into a wellness clinic but after this experience, if I had the time (and bank balance), then I would definitely make it a once a year event. After spending just one day and one night at SHA Wellness Clinic I felt relieved from all naughtiness and the detox was well under way.
