Macdonald Compleat Angler Hotel Review in Marlow

If you fancy a romantic break away from it all then the Macdonald Compleat Angler in Marlow is a charming hotel idyllically situated on the River Thames and surrounded by beautiful countryside. The 15-minute drive from Maidenhead was straight forward and really set the mood for our stay ahead at this fantastic award-winning hotel.

Upon arrival, a welcome drink of sparking Prosecco on ice and delicious Belgian chocolates awaited us in our spacious twin bedroom, overlooking the glorious cascading waters of Marlow Weir. The sunshine was also a real treat so we sat outside and relaxed on our balcony to indulge in these treats whilst listening to the calming running water.

Our room had an elegant contemporary feel and plush furnishings with everything you would ever need to make your stay comfortable. It was kitted out with a large flat screen television, tea and coffee making facilities, an appetising mini bar, the finest Molton Brown toiletries and I loved the fact that our bathroom had two basins, one for him and one for her! And, if you need to get online to find out what there is to do and where local attractions are then WIFI is readily available in the room.

At 7pm we had dinner booked in the 2AA Rosette award winning Bowaters Restaurant, which felt like we were actually on a boat and with the outside terrace just by the entrance made this part of the hotel a lovely place to enjoy a few drinks and food whatever the weather.

The restaurant itself had an intimate feel with lots of couples enjoying the delights from á la carte menu. We chose the ink squid ravioli with haddock and creamed leeks to start with, the lamb fillet for our main course, which came presented on a potato rosti and greens, both were wonderfully presented and so tasty to eat. For dessert we finished with homemade shortbread and créme brulée, which gave just enough sweetness to a rich flavoured courses we had just devoured. Coffee and a couple of handmade chocolates were just about all we could fit in before we headed back to our hotel room for the night.

After a really good nights sleep breakfast the following morning didn`t disappoint either, a fantastic choice of fresh fruit, pastries, cereals, cheeses and hams, and a cooked breakfast menu proved a fabulous start to our day ahead. This was served in the Bowaters restaurant again until 10am and as the sunshine shone through the windows it really did add to the spectacular setting, as we looked out across the river. As we were pushed for time we didn`t get to explore Marlow itself but it makes for a great excuse to go back to visit this lovely hotel and surrounding areas again.

Not surprisingly it seems people this year are enjoying their mini summer breaks in and around the UK countryside, and I have to agree it`s a good call. With that in mind Christmas and New Year is just round the corner, and there`s a great opportunity to book an early getaway at this hotel during the festive season. For those wishing to dine over the festive season you`ll also receive a discounted room rate from £120 per night for a single room and £130 for a double room! Think of it as an early Christmas pressie to yourself!!
