The best satellite phone for skiing

A few years back I was stranded with a friend on a ski slope in Meribel – France. Not much fun I can tell you. What I would have given for a good satellite phone to bring in help….

It was with this in mind that I checked out which satellite phone might be appropriate (money no object) for my ski holiday this year.

The satellite phone that kept on cropping up in our research was the Iridium 9505A. This compact gadget is able to contact anyone from just about anywhere in the world.

The Iridium case is pretty robust too – shock and dust resistant and will work in-10 Celsius temperatures. Battery life gives 130 hours of standby and 3.2 hours of talk time. However, it’s not going to replace your normal mobile anytime soon with a 75 minute prepay voucher costing £150 ($225 approx) and hand set retail value of £849 ($1275 approx)
