A copy of the Muslim Koran that dates back to 1203 has sold for a world record price of £1,140,500 at a Christie’s auction in London.

The book is believed to be the oldest complete copy in existence and is written in gold with marginal notes written in silver.

It was expected to fetch between £500,000 and £750,000 but far exceeded. A second copy of the Koran with ‘nearly-complete’ text dating back to the 10th Century went for a huge £916,500.

Both buyers were British trade buyers and the lucky owners were the Hispanic Society of America.
