Most Expensive Bed on the Planet

When I saw this on engaget a while back I must admit a wave of scepticism came over me. But undoubtedly the concept is a great one and for any super luxury home it would be an amazing addition.

Here’s engagets take:

“Sure we all like to sleep in comfort, but how many of you would be willing to pay $1.5 million for a one-of-a-kind bed? Anyone? Anyone at all? Well Dutch architect Janjaap Ruijssenaars is hoping that someone will shell out big bucks for that floating slab you see pictured above, as he’s apparently spent six years of his life in the noble pursuit of a sleeping surface that can be suspended entirely by magnets. Do you actually get a better night’s sleep on a bed that’s only attached to a solid surface with a few narrow tethers? Probably not, but it seems that anyone spending a million bucks on something like this is more concerned with impressing potential overnight guests than waking up refreshed in the morning, anyway. If you just have to get your hands on one of these, but you’d prefer to remain below the seven-figure price point, Ruijssenaars was also showing off a smaller version at the Miljonaire fair in Kortrijk that goes for a more affordable $146,000; at 1/5th the size of the regular model, it’s much too small for you to sleep in, but it would sure make a great perch for your already-spoiled dog or cat.”

I do have some reservations:

1. I’m no doctor but there has to be a question mark over the health implications of sleeping within what must be some pretty powerful magnetic fields.
2. How comfortable is it going to be? Will it oscillate or move substantially in your sleep?
3. How ever wealthy you are is it really going to be worth paying $1.5 million (£857,000) for a magnetically suspended monolith? You could buy a Bugatti Veyron with that and have a substantial sum of money left over!

Very cool. I’m not sure there would be any problems but that’s debatable I guess.

Thats a lot of cash for a bed! Looks pretty cool though, don’t know whether it would take off or not though as a mass market product!

I think this is fantastic and will lead the way for more innovating ideas such as a hovering coffee tables , seats of stools , hovering breakfast bars etc infact everything ..aim for 100% free floorspace......etc etc

This is amazing concept which can revolutionize the way we look at luxury.It requires lot of money but a worth doing investment.

Magnets are supposed to be good for you blood flow in small doses… I’m not sure about a giant magnet though...I would think it would be unhealthy. Has the maker slept on it?
