We outlined the delights of the La Cave à Fromage Christmas Hamper a few weeks ago. Since then we have had an opportunity to sample some of the cheeses in the flesh. Here’s our appraisal (well worth reading if you’re pondering which cheeses to serve this Christmas).

Bosworth Ash:  Shaped as a log and comprising unpasteurised goats cheese rolled in salted ash beneath a layer of white rind garnished with Rosemary. A pungent but tastey goats cheese, with a slightly sharp after taste. Went well with the acidity of a decent Port. Minimum weight of 150g at £7.20 per single unit.

Colston Bassett Blue Stilton: One of the finest Stilton’s I have ever tasted. Creamy, strong and deeply veined cheese. Stilton’s are not a cheese I can scoff large quantities of and this one is no different. Delicious nonetheless… £24 per Kilo.

Vacherin Mont’Dor: It’s in a box, and is recognized by its fluffy, white rind. This was the chrry on the top of our cheese selection. Of the people who sampled this cheese, each and everyone was blown away by it. Creamy, mildly cheesy, easy to spread over a thick piece of bread. A crowd pleasing cheese, one that even the most fussy eaters will enjoy. Sold at £11 per 500g unit.

Comté: A nutty, hard, ivory cheese.  It is an off ebony colour. Ideal for a nibble with some quality crackers. Subtle cheese flavours that can be enhanced by a nice chutney.  Sold at £32/Kilo.

Chablis: Incorporates a washed, orange rind. Quite possibly one of the stinkiest cheeses known to man! It really pongs. The flavour and smell are a little overpowering for my delicate tastebuds. Contained within it’s own box.  Sold at a unit price of £7.90.

Tomme au marc de raisin:  Which has a rind made up of the crushed skins and seeds of grapes. A delicious cheese, delicate easy going flavours. Another crowd pleaser!  Sold at a price of £31 per Kilo.
