I’m not sure the Italians are well known for their high end sound systems but this might become so after the release of the Pathos Endorphin which is aesthetically stunning and offers almost unrivalled sound quality.

The key to this products exceptional acoustics are the cutting edge circuitry which extracts the very best sound possible from any CD - assuming your amplifier and speakers are up to the task.

Pathos say:

“If you look in the dictionary you’ll find the word ‘Endorphin’ stands for a neurochemical occurring naturally in the human brain, promoting the release of more dopamine and resulting in feelings of enjoyment and pleasure. So, with your favourite Cds in hand, you should be in for a sonic as well as an aesthetic treat! The tech specs are top notch: Endorphin uses a dual, fully balanced tube, class A zero feedback analogue output, that is preceded by dual differential 24-bit delta-sigma DACs with a conversion rate of up to 192Kz. Dynamic range is 120Db. Output connectors give you a choice of balanced XLRs or RCA phonos. Potentially, this is a landmark player…”

This product retails for a cool £4,500 ($7,200).

I don’t think there has ever been any doubting the quality of Bang and Olufsen products. Their styling is virtually timeless and the engineering is almost always perfect. But are they cutting edge anymore? I’m not convinced, but you still can’t take away the pure excellence of the Beosound 4 and Beolab 4.

Retailing for £2,500 ($4,000). Bang and Olufsen describe this product as follows:

“With a built-in CD, radio, SD card slot and optional DAB radio, BeoSound 4 breaks new ground for accessibility to listening experiences. The dark display panel invites you to approach, where a bit of Bang & Olufsen magic awaits.

Completing the compact listening experience at home is the new BeoLab 4 loudspeaker that in concept and execution matches BeoSound 4 perfectly. Recording radio or CDs from BeoSound 4 to the SD card lets you take play your music anywhere on the BeoSound 3 portable music system or the BeoSound 2 digital music player.”

You won’t find a safer pair of hands than B & O, their products rarely fail to deliver. But do you get a bigger bang for your buck elsewhere? The answer is unequivocally yes.

Quite frankly this is one of the most astounding pieces of sound system engineering ever seen. The Clearaudio Master Reference (not a great name in my opinion) comes with a £19,750 ($31,500) price tag but you’re getting a complete one off in terms of engineering genius.

What does this hefty price mean in terms of functionality. Clearaudio say:
