It’s a fungus, it looks pretty unappetising and smells like a cross between old socks, cheese and shellfish. That’s right, I’m describing a rare white Alba truffle recently sold for a staggering $112,000 (£64,000/€95,000)
at auction to a Mr Gordon Wu a Hong Kong property developer.

The monster truffle weighed in at a hefty 2 lb. 10 oz. and was, described by auctioneers as “the size of a small handbag,”

The sale equates to a staggering $41,311 per pound (five times more valuable than gold) which must qualify as the most expensive food on the planet.

The previous record truffle sale was $27,000 per pound, set in 2004 by a syndicate including Gwyneth Paltrow.

By all accounts the auction was a pulsating competition between potential buyers in London, Hong Kong, Italy and Shanghai via satellite link.

I love a well made sandwich. Unfortunately, the tastiest combinations tend to be the most calorific and this £85 ($145) gourmet creation is not going to be an exception.

Created by Scott McDonald, the chef at Selfridges London Department store this bruiser of a sandwich owes it’s hefty price tag to
it’s key ingredient - Wagyu beef. What the hell is that you may ask? Well Wagyu are a highly groomed breed of cattle from Japan which enjoy a carefully controlled diet of beer and grain.

It is said that “they are regularly massaged with sake, the Japanese rice wine, to tenderize the flesh.”

Wagyu or not this sandwich looks delicious. Is it worth the price tag? You tell me.
