‘Sommelier’, it’s a wonderful word and so much better than ‘wine taster’, there’s something rather grand and majestic about it. And why shouldn’t there be a professional term for this wonderful craft?

Where would we be in a sea of perplexing Pinots and baffling Burgundies?  We’d be risking ‘fine dining faux-pas’, marrying the wrong vintage to the wrong dish, wasting our money and disappointing our palettes.

This is precisely why Piper Heidsieck, sponsor the UK Sommelier of the Year Awards, working alongside the Academy of Food and Wine ensure that talented sommelier’s are given they recognition they deserve.

image

Last week saw the annual ceremony take place in a plush hotel just off Knightsbridge, where drinks industry heavies rubbed shoulders alongside young upcoming talent, each individual cherry-picked from around the UK.
A night of celebration centred around a champagne dinner.  The three finalists battling for the Sommelier title had already completed an afternoon of practical tests in front of an audience including food & wine matching as well as blind tasting.

I watched as the nervous young men mounted the stage, worn out from the days trial and ready to just kick back and relax. It was a close call, the winner was Yohann Jousselin of The Vineyard Stockcross and judging by the enthusiastic cheers sounding out from the back of the room it was a much deserved reward.

The rest of us were able to tuck in to a fantastic dinner and toast each dish with a different Piper vintage.

Craft, tradition and contemporary culture were at once present, the complex blends behind the 1785 house’s champagnes seemed surprisingly at home around a table of young professionals. And no doubt for the finalists, despite their finely tuned taste buds, each glass much have seemed deliciously sweet as they drank late into the night…..

From Today until 16th July, Outline Editions on Berwick Street, Soho are hosting the ‘Godfather of the graphic art scene’ Anthony Burrill’s affordable art show, entitled ‘Clear Your Head Every Day’.

image

As you may know, Anthony Burrill was the Artist in Residence at the recent Pick me Up graphic fair and is best known for his slogan prints including ‘Work hard be nice to people’ and ‘You Know More Than You Think’.

Everything is for sale with prices from £30 - £300 and much of the work is exclusive to the gallery, so there are some great collectible bargains to be had from the UK’s leading graphic artist.

‘Clear Your Head Every Day’ will include a collection of 50 new, small-scale giclees and neon artworks created exclusively for the show, as well as collaborations with both internationally acclaimed furniture designer Michael Marriott and the sculptor WilfrId Wood.

There will be live workshops taking place and the gallery space and windows will be re-designed by Burrill and Marriott for the show; each piece will be for sale

Burrill says, ‘Clear Your Head Every Day’ is a show very much in the spirit of an open studio following on from Pick Me Up.  Everything shown is based around a theme of positivity and as the title suggests, is about an antidote to stressful, city life’.

Burrill’s up-beat work has been commissioned by everyone from Tate Modern to Colette in Paris and his prints have become mantras for the design community and beyond.

Burrill regularly collaborates with musicians and animators to make films, music promos and animations. He recently created a series of posters with political messages for the British Library and has produced adverts for London Underground and the Economist.

At Lussorian, we appreciate that the finer things in life do not have to be big bold statements.

We believe luxury comes in the form of the highest quality. That’s why we are big fans of MLS, London’s Monogrammed Linen Shop.

We have reported on the luxury linen shop before and recently told you about their new Chelsea collection.

Now, MLS have teamed up with Italian linen brand, Jesurum. The synergy is a natural one: both companies espouse the use of natural cottons and linens, as well as championing skilled craftsmanship above machine manufactured home items.

image
In fact, Monogrammed Linen Shop have been confirmed as the exclusive UK stockist for Jesurum.
Jesurum is a Venetian company and its products are still manufactured largely in Venice and the surrounding area.  It has been making sophisticated linens for the table, bedroom and bathroom for over 130 years.

It champions time-honoured forms of craftsmanship – such as lace making and hand-embroidery – and rejects all forms of mass production.

Its products are embellished with white, ecru and polychrome lace, woven on traditional looms and the embroidery is still done by hand, using skills handed down from generation to generation.

Jesurum has gained a huge and distinguished international fan base, which appreciates beautiful, elegant, natural items for the home, that remain practical at the same time.

With prices starting from £49.00, it’s never been a better time to head for The Monogrammed Linen Shop.

New and emerging artists including Lisa Gunn, Lana Locke and Keith Jansz will also be presenting their work.

It’s only right that London’s literary and cultural district holds such an important Art exhibition.

Opening with a flypast and music performed by the Parachute Regiment Band, the three-day charitable event provides the opportunity for collectors and first time buyers to acquire some exceptional works of art as well as support and highlight the achievements of people who have had catastrophic injuries.

Organized in conjunction with the Helium Foundation all proceeds from the Bloomsbury Art Fair and profits from a selection of art will be donated to a group of charities: Motivation, the Parachute Regiment Charity, the Southern Spinal Injuries Trust and the Spinal Injuries Association.

Some of the pieces offered for sale highlight the talent and determination of artists who have been affected by life changing injuries. Much feted disabled artist Lisa Gunn uses her art to express and celebrate humans’ innate resilience and strength to overcome the most traumatic events. Included in the fair is an 11ft representation of her broken spine.

Keith Jansz, who suffered a broken neck in a 1995 car accident and was left paralysed from the shoulders down, was persuaded to try painting by holding a brush in his mouth. His oil paintings are now much sought after.

The inaugural Bloomsbury Art Fair takes place between 14-16 July 2011 in the stunning Mecklenburgh Square.
